# Watch Reference Numbers Explained for Dealers > What a watch reference number is, how it differs from a serial number, how to read a Rolex or Patek Philippe reference, and why references are the foundation of valuation and authentication. - Canonical page: [https://kigu.app/blog/watch-reference-numbers-explained](https://kigu.app/blog/watch-reference-numbers-explained) - Author: Kigu Team - Published: 2026-05-06 - Updated: 2026-05-31 - Reading time: 8 minutes ## TL;DR A reference number identifies the exact model and specification of a watch and is the same across every example of that model; a serial number is unique to the individual watch. Dealers use the reference to pin down the model, find comparable sales and value the piece. Reading the structure (e.g. Rolex 116610LN = Submariner Date / mid-size / steel / black ceramic bezel) is a core dealer skill — and invalid structures are a counterfeit red flag. Before you can value or authenticate a watch, you have to identify exactly what it is — and that starts with the reference number. Confusing it with the serial number is one of the most common beginner errors. ## Reference vs serial number - **Reference number** — identifies the model and its specifications. It's identical on every watch of that model. Typically 4–6 digits (often with letters). - **Serial number** — unique to the individual watch. Historically used to date production. Typically 4–8 digits. On a Rolex, the reference is engraved between the lugs at 12 o'clock; the serial is at 6 o'clock on older watches (pre-2007) or on the rehaut (the inner bezel ring) on newer ones. Note that Rolex switched to **random** serial numbers in spring 2010, so you can no longer date a post-2010 Rolex from its serial alone. ## How to read a Rolex reference: 116610LN Reference numbers are codes you can decode. Take the Rolex Submariner Date **116610LN**: *Breaking down Rolex reference 116610LN.* | Segment | Meaning | | --- | --- | | 1166 | Submariner Date model family | | 1 | Mid-size / generation variant | | 0 | Oystersteel (stainless steel) | | LN | Lunette noire — black (ceramic) bezel | From four characters you've established model, size, metal and bezel. The same logic applies across Rolex's catalogue (for example 16234 = Datejust / fluted bezel / steel with white gold). ## Other brands: Patek Philippe Patek Philippe references follow their own structure: a four-digit model code, a material letter, and a dial iteration code — e.g. 5726/1A-014. Material letters come from French: **A** = acier (steel), **J** = jaune (yellow gold), **R** = rose (rose gold). Model codes starting with 3, 5 or 6 are typically men's; 4 or 7 typically ladies'. ## Why references matter to dealers - **Valuation.** The reference is the first input to value — you look up recent comparable sales for that exact reference, year and condition. - **Search and comparables.** Marketplaces let you filter by reference to see real selling prices, not just asking prices. - **Authentication.** A reference must follow strict brand-specific formatting. An invalid structure — or a real reference paired with an impossible serial format — is a counterfeit red flag. > **Structure your inventory by reference:** Kigu captures brand, model, reference, serial and condition in a structured way, so you can search and value your stock the way dealers actually work. The reference number identifies the model and is the same on every example of that model; the serial number is unique to the individual watch and was historically used to date it. ### Where is the reference number on a Rolex? Engraved between the lugs at the 12 o'clock side. The serial number is at 6 o'clock on pre-2007 watches, or on the rehaut (inner bezel ring) on newer ones. ### Can I date a Rolex from its serial number? Only for watches made before spring 2010. After that, Rolex adopted random serial numbers, so the serial no longer indicates production year. ### How does the reference help authentication? Valid references follow strict brand-specific formats. An invalid reference structure, or a genuine reference combined with an impossible serial format, is a strong sign of a counterfeit. ## Related reading - [How to Authenticate a Luxury Watch Before You Buy for Resale](https://kigu.app/blog/how-to-authenticate-a-luxury-watch.md): A dealer's checklist for authenticating luxury watches before purchase — reference and serial verification, movement inspection, papers and box, weight and finishing checks, and when to use a professional. - [The Chrono24 Listing Guide for Professional Dealers](https://kigu.app/blog/chrono24-listing-guide.md): How to list watches that sell on Chrono24 — understanding the 2026 fee structure, building listings that convert, pricing against the market, and protecting your margin after commission. - [WhatsApp Workflow for Watch Dealers: Chat to Inventory](https://kigu.app/blog/whatsapp-for-watch-dealers.md): A practical watch-dealer workflow for turning high-volume WhatsApp group messages into searchable listings, buy-request matches and inventory records.
